Covered Polystyrene Head

Hi !!!
A while ago I did this project, but I have not been able to write this post until now ...
Also because this project happened a while ago my photography skills were not as advanced and my house was much more messy as we were mid way through sorting through boxes, so some of the backgrounds are a bit cluttered. Sorry.

So ...

At home I had a polystyrene that had been thrown out of the window when we were burgled a few years ago. This caused it to be very dented and grubby. I had the idea to cover it, but it took me a while to find the right materials to do so.

A few months later, when sorting through boxes I found some old House & Gardens magazines from around the 1960's and instead of just recycling them I thought they would be perfect for this. But you can use anything you want to.

Here is what I did:

1. Rip up some tissue paper to act as a base for your magazine cuttings (or other material you are using)
2. Mix PVA glue and water.
3. Paper Mache the whole head with the tissue paper and glue
4. Search through magazines searching for the bits you want to glue on, I chose the adverts as I though they had a nice appearance.
5. Rip them out.
6. Collect the pieces together, you will need more then you think.
7. As I used a magazine with thick paper I soaked the cuttings for about 30 seconds before gluing them so that I could mould them to the shape of the head better.
8. Glue the cuttings to the head, try to shape them to the object in a way that is easiest for you, near the end of the making process I discovered for my paper it worked best if I made small folds in the paper so that it would look better. Then cover with a layer of glue.

9. Finally, add one last layer of glue to create a nice finish and also to glue down any odd pieces that have become unstuck.

Here is my finish product:

I am very happy with how this has turned out as the head looks much better than it did with dents in and also it is something everyone will have as it is handmade.

Hope to write again soon !!!
