Yves Saint Laurent Style is Eternal

Hi !!!
When I went to Richmond ,I went to see the Yves Saint Laurent- Style is Eternal exhibition at the Bowes Museum.

The exhibition was split into three galleries, the first showing a film of catwalk shows and some quotes, the second showing another film and how the clothes were made and the third showing some clothes from catwalk shows. I really like the second gallery as I enjoyed learning how the clothes were made from as sketch, to a toile, to choosing to fabric and where the pattern would sit on the clothing, to making the final piece specialised for a client. I also found the film in the second gallery very interesting as it showed how he was influenced by Morocco and this made me understand his clothes and concepts more clearly, with the colour choices, designs and extravagance of the pieces.

The clothes were split into different sections: transparency, masculinity, art, haute couture and splendid. Some of the pieces I regonised the inspiration for them, such as art, particularly the pieces inspired by Mondrian, Matisse, Magritte and Picasso. I also recognised some similarities to Dior with some of the pieces, later I found out that he worked for Dior for a few years. I love the lines he created through clothing and that to me is what stands out about the brand and from the age of 14/15 he could draw beautifully shaped dresses.

Overall I thought the exhibition was good, the third room showcased the clothes well and the second room showed a very good film that I learnt a lot from, however in total there weren't many clothes on show and there were still some of the museum's collection on display with the exhibition pieces, which I didn't think worked.

I went into the exhibition without knowing much about the brand or the designer, but now I understand more about the brand and what inspired the pieces.

I really like the look of these mannequins and how they have tape on them to help with creating shapes and tailoring the clothes

A toile

Both of these dresses were inspired by Matisse

I really like this dress, inspired by Piet Mondrian
